Very Private, Nay, Secret Restaurants
Filed in archive Trends on January 27, 2006

Dining at very intimate settings has a certain allure. One of the hottest trends in the foodie scene may just be exclusive venues that require an invitation to get in. If you are thinking of elite clubs, then think again. On the other hand, restaurants with secret addresses might just be that - elite clubs. Eating in one however, does not take much. You just have to know the owner, know a friend of the owner, have a friend who is willing to start one or even start one yourself!
If you can cook fancy dishes, the last option could just be the easiest. It also does not take much. You can have the restaurant in your own home and have it open for service anytime you want, just like the ghetto Gourmet and a few like it.
Janine DeFao of the San Francisco Chronicle writes:
"Culinary speakeasies like Ghetto Gourmet are popping up in cities in the Bay Area and beyond, across the country and around the world.
"Part of the thrill, of course, is the hipness factor, the ego-inflating I-know-something-or-somebody-you-don't-know feeling that comes with being on a VIP list. But underground diners also can find surprisingly good food at bargain-basement prices."
How exciting! Such "supper clubs" are now mainstays in many parts of the world from Hong Kong to Paris and Prague, all the way to Cuba and many parts of the US.
