I've been wanting to build a clay or brick oven for sometime now. Although I have the spare space (and more!), but what stops me from having one is the thought that except for a few days in a year, it will just stand there gathering dust. After all, fresh and good quality bread is available anytime and much as I love pizza, it's not something I'd eat everyday. For my baking needs, there's the conventional oven. Cooking for one most of the time, I have a stovetop just for that purpose.
Well, now I'm having second thoughts with that kind of thinking. The picture above is from breadnerd's blog. Aside from the fantastic breads, he's also been roasting pumpkin seeds and granola. Dried fruits too!
Now, I'm seriously considering the project. I wonder how the Neighbours would think if I told them we can all bake together come Christmastime.

the idea of a village oven has such appeal for me. and some people are trying to bring this practice back. (a pity none of them are near me.) a cyber-friend who has a brick oven bakes all day, because it takes so much work just to get these things started, that to just bake one thing would be waste. first it's the pizzas at 800-900 degrees F, then the roasts -- beef, turkey, etc. then as the oven slowly cools down the breads at 375-400, etc. you really have to be a good planner on top of all that just to bake! they also plan neighborhood bakes, where everyone brings a loaf of bread, or roast, and they take turns using the brick oven. i'm so envious, as you can tell.
