Throw a great party

Throwing a party doesn't have to break the bank or send you running for your antacid tablets. Let's take a look at some simple steps that will help you put together your next bash.

Choose a main focus for the party - Do you want to host a wine and cheese tasting? Perhaps your guests would like to try Gourmet fondue? The possibilities are endless, but try to stick with one overall theme.

Create a guest list - Be sure that your home can comfortably accomodate the number of people that you'd like to invite. Don't be afraid to "mix it up" a bit and invite friends from work, as well as your neighbors. The more varied the guest list, the more opportunity for interesting conversation.

Decide whether you'd like the party to be formal or informal - Would your guests prefer a sit down meal or would they enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere?

Plan the menu - When selecting menu items for your party remember that the more unusual an ingredient is, the more difficult it may be to find. Pomegranite sorbet may not be a good menu option if you'll have to special order the fresh ingredients out of season.

Create a checklist - Make a list of every detail to ensure that nothing gets overlooked. It's also a good idea to plan a cooking timetable so you'll remember exactly when to slide that souffle into the oven.

Send out invitations - The invitations don't have to be elaborate but here's a chance to be creative. If you're having a wine and cheese party, write the invitation on notecards shaped like wine glasses (available at most fine wine shops). Mail them out at least three weeks in advance and don't forget to request an R.S.V.P.

Consider hiring help - If your budget allows, consider hiring someone the day of the party to work as your assitant in the kitchen or, for a more formal party, to serve food. Also consider hiring someone to focus on housekeeping issues the day before the party so you'll be free to address last minute details.

Relax and enjoy yourself! - If you're having a good time at your party, your guests will too.
