The First Weekend in May
Filed in archive Morsels of Info by Jennifer on May 1, 2008
There are too many events to list this weekend! Here are some of the highlights:

A Taste of the Dales in Leyburn, England offers a weekend of local food vendors, cooking demonstrations, farming advice, events for the kids and "food and drink galore!"

From the fresh and local to a canned product whose shelf life is "indefinite."

The 6th Annual Waikiki Spam Jam is on this Saturday. Think of it; an entire day celebrating Hawaii's love for the infamous canned meat, Spam. The event benefits the Hawaii Food Bank.

Long Grove, Illinois has a scrumptious attraction this weekend; The 9th Annual Long Grove Chocolate Festival.
Wherever you go, surrender to temptation as you bite into a cold chocolate-dipped strawberry, crunch on fresh chocolate popcorn, bask in the flavor of a perfect chocolate cake, taste the sweetness of the ultimate chocolate donut... even sip up a chocolate martini!
The event also features live music and demonstrations by chocolate artists and pastry chefs. A chocolate lover's paradise!

More chocolate to taste in Bruges, Belgium. From May 1-5, Choco-laté, The European Chocolate Festival, is offering festival goers Chocolate Demonstrations and delicious Chocolate Tasting Events.

Arab, Alabama is hosting their annual Poke Salat Festival this Friday and Saturday. What is Poke Salat, you might ask?
No one is one hundred percent sure how Poke Salat got it's name. Old timers have as many different stories about poke as there are people telling them. Most agree that the word "salat" comes from the German word for salad. There are two common theories about the name "poke." Some believe that since the berries have an indentation in the middle, that it appears someone has "poked" them, hence the name. Others hold firm that the name comes from the sack, or poke, used to carry the leaves when harvested. (You know, like a pig in a poke.)

But no matter how it derived its name, folks in Arab think it's worth celebrating... So, whether you call it salad, poke, or poke greens, just come eat your fill at the next Arab Poke Salat Festival!
