Super Bowl Food Fight!
Filed in archive News , Traditions on February 1, 2006

Super Bowl Sunday is in a few days yet but a food fight is already in full swing! It's not between fans of the Steelers and Seahawks though but between food writers and the Food Network! Yes, it's all about food.
Ever ready to join in the fun, the network e-mailed food editors and writers, suggesting one menu for Pittsburgh food and another for Seattle fare. The response was, well, probably not one they expected. The Seattle menu got a very lukewarm reception. The Pittsburgh menu was deemed unacceptable by the natives.
The Morning Call's Diane Stoneback quotes Pittsburgh Tribune-Review food writer Karin Welzel:
''We are a highly ethnic community and will be eating favorites including pierogies, haluski (cabbage and noodles with lots of butter), cabbage rolls, kielbasa, Italian sausage with grilled peppers and onions, and all kinds of meat and cheese sandwiches containing sliced tomato, vinegar-style coleslaw and french fries.''
It seems the Pittsburgh folks are also taking exception to the Food Network's not mentioning monster sandwiches. These are homemade versions of the iconic Primanti Bros. sandwiches, a Pittsburgh tradition.

While you're at it, check out the Primanti Bros. website with its story of how their sandwiches came to be. Innovative, I must say!
