Snacking on Nuts
Filed in archive Around The Kitchen , Tricks & Techniques on June 5, 2006

Nuts are a healthy source of protein, B vitamins and minerals. I buy them by the tub to serve when there's company. They're a better snack alternative - healthier than candies or pastries.
Buying nuts by bulk is more economical too. Sometimes I even buy the supermarket brands when they're on sale. However these are saltier than I want them. This is what I do:
Place the nuts in a deep container like a salad bowl and shake them well. The salt should fall to the bottom of the bowl. Transfer the nuts to another container, leaving the salt that was shaken off. To counteract the saltiness, I usually add a handful of raisins (1:2 ratio raisins:nuts) and mix them all together. Sometimes I chop other dried fruits such as apricots, pears and peaches to mix in too. Dried fruits are another source of protein, vitamins and minerals.
Enjoy and snack healthy!
