My foray into cooking began not by experimenting with my mother's trusted family recipes, but by watching hours of the Food Network Channel where I drooled over Ina Garten's delicious-looking creations.

The popular show Barefoot Contessa (named after the specialty food store in the Hamptons that Garten used to run) is Garten's showcase for her culinary passions and entertaining ideas. The best part about her approach to cooking is that her recipes range from easy to advanced, ensuring that there is something for every one to attempt. From her beautiful home in the Hamptons, Garten whips up dishes according to the episode's theme, preparing them effortlessly and presenting them in a simple and stylish manner.

Ina Garten's book, The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, is no different from the show except that it is readily accessible whenever you need it. This is an excellent addition to the kitchen and is full of a wide array of appetizing recipes that range from a simple sun dried tomato dip that can be made in minutes to a more elaborate filet of beef bourguignon. There is a section devoted to salads, soups, as well as vegetarian dishes (the parmesan smashed potatoes will not disappoint!). There are also a number of mouthwatering recipes in the desserts section with goodies that include Garten's outrageous brownies and fresh peach and raspberry crisps that are served with ice cream. The accompanying photos make these desserts look just as delectable as they sound.

I'm no Ina Garten, but flipping through the pages of this visually appealing book provides me inspiration before attempting a cooking session. The recipes are straightforward and the food tastes just as good as it looks, if not better. What I really appreciate about this cookbook is the small additions that Garten makes. One wouldn't expect to find recipes for fresh lemonade or the perfect cup of coffee but Garten revisits these in her own style. Tips on creating fruit and dessert platters, planning cocktail parties, choosing fresh ingredients and a glossarylinks of kitchen terms are all valuable touches that I find extremely helpful when I plan a party of my own.
