Muscat St. Jean de Minervois

Filed in archive Drinks on September 2, 2007

If you want to taste something truly sublime, look no further than a renowned, sweet white wine that is produced in a little village in the Languedoc region, called Muscat St. Jean de Minervois.

This is not a cloyingly sweet wine, rather a wine full of lush, ripe flavors such as apricot, quince, mango, mandarin and honey. It has a luxurious, deep gold color and is rich on the palate.

St. Jean de Minervois is a tiny village, population around 100, in southern France. The small appellation consists of only 160 hectares at an elevation of 250 meters. The combination of the tempered climate and the bed of white rocks, called schiste, in which the vines are grown, make ideal growing conditions for the muscat blanc à petits grains varietal.

Muscat St. Jean de Minervois should be served very cold. It is a delicious, refreshing apéritif and pairs beautifully with Roquefort cheese.
