People Who Cook
by karen on October 14, 2006
It is a large and diverse continent and perhaps only a handful of people know African cuisine. Thank goodness for the internet and more reading materials on African cooking, I now know a bit more than I did a year ago.
As I was surfing for some African food lit, I always come across the name of Marcus Samuelsson. His multi-cultural background is very interesting: born in ethiopia then grew up in Sweden with adoptive parents. He's an acclaimed chef of Scandinavian food. Now, he has a book about exploring the cuisine of his birthplace.
Fodor's Travel Wire has an interesting article on Chef Samuelsson. It does come through that even for someone like him, with a bit more examination, Africa and its cuisine is seen with fresh eyes.
The coolest thing about Africa is its huge diversity of people -- it's not one country, one culture, one religion, or one color. And the heart of that diversity, in terms of its expression in food and music, is incredible. That was the neatest surprise for me.
But here's my favourite quote:
The point of travel is to travel, not to stay where you are. If you want to get something that you can have at home, stay home. But if you want to travel, really travel, then talk to the local people you meet, find out where they go, and be open to new experiences.
Well said Chef Samuelsson!

karen, another coincidence??? LOL. for the past week i've been going over his book "The Soul of a New Cuisine". It's a gorgeous, gorgeous book, and I've bookmarked several recipes already to try, and will probably feature a couple of breads sometime at bakingdelights.

Will wonders never cease? LOL
I have several books on my 'to buy' list but ever since I've read advanced reviews and the background of Chef Samuelsson, I decided I'll get myself a copy. Shall we compare notes, then? Hehehe!

I was born and raised in then Tanganyika of missionary parents and I dearly love the country.
