Granny's Apple Fries
Filed in archive Gourmet Goodies on April 30, 2007
When I ordered these apple fries for my daughters at a recent trip to Legoland, California, I had NO idea how popular they were! Here I was thinking they're just another food stand favorite, like Dippin' Dots or corndogs that are in just about every theme park there is.
They are VERY VERY good, however, and an ingenious idea for sure. They're granny Smith apples, yup, those apples with a delightful tang perfect in apple pies -- dipped in some sort of sugary, cinnamony mixture and deep-fried, then served with vanilla whipped cream. Yum!
As soon as I got to the hotel I googled for a recipe hoping to replicate them when we got home, and look what I found -- a whole slew of people in love with them! I should have known: fried, crunchy, sweet -- how could anyone not like it?
Here's Legoland's bit saying that it is, in fact, a Legoland invention (and you thought they only made Legos!), Funworld's article mentioning the guys responsible for this product, a Chowhound thread, and a copycat recipe at Yahoo! Answers. Nope, I haven't tried it but you can bet I will soon!

The apple fries recipe on Youtube.com is a good start, but the fries do not have that great crunch texture as the Legoland's. One suggestion is to freeze the fries after coating them in corn starch for 3-4 hrs. The skin after frying them was crunchier. I'm going to experiment w/ a thin batter coating to give them more crunch, just like the original. Keep posting any new suggestions. The search goes on! -Justin

These are the best snack ever. They are the main reason to go to Legoland, the rest is ok; but these fries are fantastic!

Having been an apple processor since 1975 I will say this . Apple fries or any form that would allow to add value to a slice or dice or fry cut of apple could make the apple industry just like the Potato Industry was made by JR and Gib Lamb. Keep trying the right combo of corn starch etc. Believe me I too have attempted different ways of developing the Battered apple slices. Please feel free to email back and forth about this as I feel it is a great way of expanding on a good to eat apple product. How about a pre-baked product that is not deep fat fried but is done with out the oil from the fryer. Keep chatting,
