Exotic Fruits
Filed in archive Gourmet Goodies on December 26, 2007
The winter brings many things. Cold. Possibly snow and ice. Hearty bowls of stew. Numerous festivities. Hot cups of coffee, tea and cocoa. Long nights snuggled up in front of the fire. And...
Exotic, tropical fruit.
This time of year fresh fruit is pretty scarce. Why not be adventurous and try some of that odd looking fruit you might see in the local market or grocery store?

The sweet flavored Custard Apple is the heart shaped fruit with what looks like scales. They are a sub-tropical fruit that offer many diverse culinary uses.
Rambatans are those red, hairy little ones. This sweet, slightly acidic fruit is very common in Southeast Asia and is delicious for making desserts.
The small, round, yellow fruit are Longans. Mostly grown in Asia, Longans have a thin skin, translucent white flesh and a large, single black seed. They taste similar to their cousins, the Lychee, but a are a bit sweeter and not as juicy. Here is an exotic recipe for Rambutan and Longan Salsa.
I'm pretty sure I don't need to tell you what those green things are!
