Churros

Churros are deep-fried pastry snacks. There are many international delights that belong to the fried dough category, but churros' particular appeal comes from its crispy, ridged, cylindrical shape. Eaten as is or dipped in thick hot chocolate, it is a Spanish/Latin American street fare that has grown in popularity all over the world. Churro stands fluorish in the US, and its presence at theme parks (like Legoland where this shot was taken) and fairs are testament to Americans' love for this treat. In Asia, the tradition has been passed on to the Filipinos via Spain and Mexico. My memory of this churro-chocolate combination as a child has grown to a love that I have carried to adulthood. I remember the first time I saw churros in Texas -- it was a microwavable product, and though I generally abhor these things I *had* to buy some just so my kids could taste what I had enjoyed when I was younger. Of course it wasn't exactly the same, but I was happy to give them an approximation of the real thing. I have since tried to make some at home, but I have yet to perfect the technique. More on churros from Wikipedia.

Churros can be enjoyed any time of day, but it is especially suitable for a mid-afternoon snack or merienda. A labor of love for sure but these days, so many products are available to help you make churros at home.

Try out this churrero from Amazon:

I like my churros plain or cinnamon-flavored, but they can also be flavored with vanilla, or almond, or anise. You can follow this recipe, or purchase this mix:
