Cherry Picking Time

Filed in archive From Garden to Table , Ingredient Spotlight , Recipes on May 26, 2008

The sour cherry season is in full swing here.
And that means we'll be the happy recipients of many gift bags overflowing with the tart little treats from friends and neighbors.

The first thing I did with the most recent bag was get my cherry pitter out and pit half of them. I then took a pound of the un-pitted cherries, threw them into a big jar and added 3 cups of vodka. They'll get a good stir every day for several weeks, then a cup and a half of sugar added and more stirring for several more weeks. The strained Liqueur will be bottled and left to sit for about 5-6 months. We plan on a grand tasting of the Sour Cherry Liqueur around Christmas time.

The pitted cherries have been cooked down and will be made into a nice, rich batch of either Sour Cherry Ice Cream or Sour Cherry Gelato.
